The Internet offers a platform and set of communications tools that are valuable to all nonprofit organizations in your fundraising activities. Your donors and potential donors often use the Internet to check up on organizations before they make a commitment. Your Internet communications plan can include multiple points of entry – your website, Facebook page, Blog, email newsletter, registration on various portals, online photo galleries, YouTube and other social media. Using the internet effectively does not mean just sticking on a “DONATE NOW” button. Here are a few strategies to consider:

Build Credibility: Your website should give people confidence. Make sure that the content is up to date, that there are no bad links, and that the website is attractive and easy to use. The website is your key communications point for the visitor.

Build Relationships: Through your website, Facebook Page, and your email newsletter keep in touch on a regular basis with people who visit the website. Include specific “Calls to Action” that will encourage people to come back often and interact – sign up for your mailing list, ask a question, make a donation, volunteer, or get involved in some way.

Build Donations: Include a method for people to donate on your website, for example with a PayPal “Donate” button, or other donation methods. Include different levels of donations so that a person can give a small donation while you are building up the relation and their comfort with your organization. Setup an automatic “Thank You” email – but also follow up with other emails and reports of how donations are being used.

Build Your List: Your list is a powerful asset for your organization. Use the internet to build your list through having people sign up for your email newsletter, put in their email to request to download a report or article, or sign up for an online webinar or attend an event. Be sure to use non-internet methods to build your list also including adding a “sign up for our newsletter” in your email signature file.

Share your Internet communications plan with the people in your organization. Many of them may be using Facebook or other social media. Ask them to refer potential interested friends and colleagues to the website and invite them to link to you.

Denise Davies of Aleph Consulting ( http://www.alephconsulting.org ) works with nonprofit organizations and offers planning and implementation for website design, implementation and management; strategies and setup of social media; and design and management of email newsletters and overall Internet communications strategy. davies@alephinc.com

I had a client who wanted to drive prospective customers to his online store using a postcard. Great idea, I thought, and cost effective.

He had a terrific product, a compelling offer, and a sound business model. He had just one problem. He wanted to make all website visitors register before they could browse his product catalog. Big mistake.

So I, along with his business partner, managed to talk him out of the idea. And he was glad that we did.

That’s because one of the fundamental requirements of direct mail is that you make it easy for your prospects, customers and donors to respond. The word to remember is “convenience.” You must make responding as convenient as possible. Here are some ways to do that with your donors.

REPLY DEVICE

Print your donor’s name and address on it so the donor doesn’t have to.

If your donors must complete part of the card, give them enough space (most direct mail donors are over 60 and can’t read or write without glasses).

REPLY ENVELOPE

Pay for return postage so your donors don’t have to hunt for a stamp.

Print your return address on the return envelope.

TEAR-OUT COUPONS

Place coupons at the outside corners of the page (not in the gutter or the middle of the page), where they are easy to tear out.

Perforate the edges of tear-out coupons with a fine perf, not a coarse one, so they are easy to tear out.

PAYMENT

Offer as many payment options as possible without paralyzing your reader.

Accept all the major credit cards.

Accept cheques.

Accept recurring monthly donations.

Accept donations by telephone (toll-free, of course).

Accept donations by mail.

Accept donations on your website.

One of the beautiful things about donating by mail is the convenience. But that is only true if the direct mail donating experience is convenient. Use some of these methods to improve your convenience quotient and your donors will thank you for it-with their gifts.

If you live in NC, OK or AR, hold your next Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's.
Also in the news: Wild Game Dinners and cooperative marching band shows.

News - Apple Gold Group, the Applebee’s franchisee in NC, AR and OK will host your Flapjack Fundraiser. They will provide the food and cooks, you provide the guests, servers & bussers. Events may be scheduled on Saturday or Sunday mornings. AGG will charge your organization for food at their cost, you keep the rest of the ticket price. See Apple Gold Group’s website for details.
Views- AGG’s cost appears to be less than 1/3 of the average ticket price. This is becoming a popular program, so open weekends may fill up fast.

News - Wild game dinners are catching on at several churches, mostly in the southern U.S. Area residents flock to the events. Many of the older residents say it reminds them of the kinds of meat they ate growing up. Prices vary from $8 to $15 and include home-made side dishes. Among the meats offered are bear, alligator, chicken, elk, deer, antelope, pheasant, turkey, wild hog, duck, goose, possum and racoon.

News - Carver High School (NC) recently held a LUV the Band event. The school’s marching band put on a special show and was joined by the High Point Central High School marching band, as well as the Boss Drummers, a drum group from the Winston Lake YMCA. The groups took turns playing and presented ensembles and skits that aren’t part of a formal marching band competition. They hope to expand the fundraiser next year with more bands and other musical groups.
Views- How about a cooperative agreement where multiple schools will take part in each other’s fundraisers? Other forms of entertainment could be used while the bands are moving on/off the field; singing groups, performers, specialty acts.

Cooking classes, dodgeball, variety shows...several ideas for fundraisers. Adapt other's ideas to your charity.

In San Antonio, four UTSA seniors created a fundraiser to benefit the Animal Defense League of Texas. They solicited area businesses to donate gift certificates and merchandise to be raffled off at the fundraising event. Besides the raffle, the event featured live music, refreshments and dog-training sessions. Dogs from the ADL’s shelter were on hand to meet the public and possibly be placed for adoption.

The Summer Arts Scene For Youth (SASFY) is hosting a variety show to support its week-long summer program. The program introduces youths to the variety of arts available to them. Hundreds of local performers volunteer their talents for the benefit, including singers, dancers, musicians and artists. On the day of the show, a silent auction is held to sell donated works of art. SASFY has been working with the Lake Country (BC) Chamber of Commerce to promote the variety show and hopes to turn it into a major annual event.

Here’s a tip that may double your fundraising total. Many companies offer matching funds for donations to charity. In Georgia, members of the Dalton Modern Woodmen of America camp are holding a fundraiser to help local families in need. Everyone who makes a donation receives a beef stew dinner, followed by a free movie. The home office of the Modern Woodmen will match donations up to $2,500.

Over the past year, the Greater Lansing (MI) Food Bank has fed about 80,000 people. To accomplish such a feat, they have developed a network of providers, gardeners, distributors and fundraisers. For the past 27 years, the food bank has teamed with the Lansing State Journal newspaper to make it easier for people to give. On Nov 8th, every subscriber received an envelope in their Sunday paper in which they could place a donation and drop it into the mail.

Dunkin Donuts has come to the aid of the Roswell Park (NY) Cancer Institute with its “Mugs of Hope” program. Patrons can buy a mug, decorated by young patients of the cancer institute, for $100. The owner of the mug will receive free refills at any Dunkin Donuts for the entire following year. All proceeds from the sale of the mugs goes to Roswell’s Paint Box Project, which uplifts the spirits of young cancer patients.

The St. Joseph Center, in Venice, CA, offers a Culinary Experience for a Cause. For a suitable donation, local chefs teach participants how to make a variety of holiday desserts. Monies raised help support St. Joseph’s Culinary Training Program, which prepares low-income, unemployed individuals with the skills necessary to obtain employment in the food industry.

This week, we noticed that several fundraisers are holding Dodge Ball Tournaments. Teams pay an entry fee and the winning team receives a cash prize, a trophy or merchandise donated by local businesses.

Pancake breakfasts and entertainment nights are featured today. The good part about entertainers is they usually bring along family and friends to your event.

A Tulsa group is holding a pancake breakfast for laid off workers. Pancake breakfasts can be quick and easy fundraiser which may have lots of options added, such as silent auctions and bake sales. Entertainment from volunteers may draw family members and fans. To cut costs and reduce work, have a BYOB pancake breakfast (Bring Your Own Bottle (of Syrup)). Donations of cash or staples may also be solicited.

In Missouri, a night of entertainment will benefit a local children’s charity. Entertainment nights can feature local school choirs, church choirs, regional theater groups and area musicians. Each entertainer does one or two numbers. A theme can be chosen for the night, such as Christmas, light-hearted music, regional music, etc. The more entertainers you have, the bigger the crowd as family members, friends and fans are sure to attend.
